Course content
In lectures, students will become familiar with the development of German-language literature from the Czech lands from the High Middle Ages to intercultural literature. Emphasis will be placed on Prague's German literature. In seminars, they will learn to place the analyzed work within the historical context and identify various themes of German-language literature in our region. 1. High Middle Ages Literature: Minnesang, Jan ze Žatce: Der Ackermann aus Böhmen 2. 19th-century Literature: Franz Grillparzer; Adalbert Stifter (Abdias); Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (Das Gemeindekind) 3. Turn of the Century: Impressionism, Symbolism; Rainer Maria Rilke 4. Turn of the Century: Decadence; Robert Musil (Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß) 5. Prague's German Literature: 3 generations, ethnic and sociological characteristics; stories from the ghetto: Salomon Kohn; Gustav Meyrink and bourgeois satire 6. Prague's German Literature: Expressionism; Franz Werfel (Nicht der Mörder, der Ermordete ist schuldig) 7. The Prague Circle: Max Brod, Egon Erwin Kisch (Galgentoni) 8. The Prague Circle: Franz Kafka, stories: Das Urteil, Die Verwandlung 9. Prague's German Literature: Lenka Reinerová (Alle Farben der Sonne und der Nacht) 10. Migration or Intercultural Literature: Libuše Moníková (Verklärte Nacht) 11. Migration or Intercultural Literature: Irena Brežná (Die beste aller Welten) 12. Migration or Intercultural Literature: Michael Stavarič (Königreich der Schatten) 13. Evaluation and Credit Test
