Course content
1. Periodization of the historical development of the Russian language. The role of Church Slavonic in the history of Russian. 2. The influence of dialects on the formation of written Russian. 3. Internal laws of language development (laws of systematicity, tradition, analogy, speech economy, linguistic antonyms) and social causes of language changes. 4. Linguistic variation (variation of linguistic feature, types of variants, competition of variants in the process of language development). Understanding the linguistic norm (definition of linguistic norm, criteria of normativity, norm and codification). 5. Active processes in phonetics and graphics (the main directions of norm changes in pronunciation, the reasons for the constancy of accent norms, graphic transformations in media texts and advertising). 6. Active processes in word formation (growth of nominal prefixation, activation of compounds, abreviation). Active processes in morphology and syntax (tendency to analysticism, influence of colloquial language on syntactic arrangements). 7. The main semantic processes in contemporary lexis (changes in the relations between the meanings of polysemous words, the process of expansion or contraction of meaning, the emergence of new word meanings, etc.). 8. Active processes in Russian phraseology (ways of formation of new phraseologisms, thematic areas of new phraseology). 9. Redistribution of active and passive vocabulary (passivization, results of passivization, activation of earlier historisms, lexical updating). Functional-stylistic changes in contemporary Russian (activation of jargon, formation of general jargon). 10. Adoption from foreign languages (extralinguistic and intrinsic linguistic causes of adoption, thematic areas of the last wave of adoption, adaptation of adopted words in the Russian language system, codification of adoptions). 11. Active processes in contemporary lexicography (printed and electronic dictionaries: advantages and shortcomings, new possibilities of lexicography and contemporary types of dictionaries). 12. Fashion words in Russian (fashion words as a social phenomenon, symptoms of fashion words).
