Course content
1. Specific features of development of Russian literature of 20th century (1917- ca. 2000), narrow ties to political development in Russia. Classification of the literary development. Multi-nationality of the literature of the Soviet period. 2. Characteristics of the various developmental stages of literature. Reappraising tendencies of the literary development. 3. Work of I. Bunin in the context of European literature. 4 The issue of exile literature and so called inner emigration, the main authors. 5. Russian modernism and its authors in the context of European literatures (symbolism, futurism, imaginism, etc.). 6. Socialist Realism in the wider cultural and social context. Work of M. Gorky, M. Sholokhov in the period and contemporary context. 7. Work of M. Bulgakov in the context of Russian and world literature. 8. Work of V. Nabokov in the context of Russian and world literature. 9. Personality of B. Pasternak and his novel Doctor Zhivago. 10. Literature of the so called melting period (60s), the origin of Samizdat, underground. 11. A. Solzhenitsyn the author of the "lager literature", his work in the contemporary context. 12. - 13. The basic attributes of the literature development after 1985, Russian postmodernism and its authors.
