Course content
1. An introduction to the topic definition of the term "world literature", relationship between national literature and the world one. 2. - 3. Special features of Bible, the position of Bible in the context of the world literature. Biblical topics, themes and figurativeness in some works of world literature (etc. Dante: Divine Comedy, Goethe: Faust, Dostoevsky: The Brothers Karamazov, Bulgakov: The Master and Margarita). 4. - 6. Biblical topic, themes in European literature (e.g. Dante - Divine Comedy, Goethe - Faust, Dostoevsky - Karamazov Brothers, Bulgakov - Master and Margarita) 7. Laugh and comedy in the European literature (Rabelais). 8. The philosophy of existentialism in literature. (Sartre, Camuse). Existential theme in Kafka?s works. 9. - 10. Modernism in literature, origins of the modernist novel (e.g. Joyce:Ulysses, T.Mann: Magic Mountain, Bely:Petersburg). 11. - 12. Post-modern literature. 13. Discussion. Students will present their papers on chosen topic in seminars.
