Course content
1. Word and Image: How do we interpret works of art? Individual approaches to the interpretation of the work of art (analysis - interpretation - evaluation) 2. Interpretative approaches and historical conditionality of the interpretation of art over the centuries. Formal, content, structural, psychological approaches etc. Introduction to the subject. 3. Mind in the Cave: Art as a part of religion. Contemporary interpretative approaches to the earliest artistic expression of humankind (D. Lewis-Williams) 4. The beginnings of the theoretical reflection of artistic creation in the Antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, Plinius and the notion of "mimesis") 5. Symbolic-allegorical concept of the world in medieval art (U. Eco) 6. Iconographical and Iconological Interpretation of Artwork: Artwork as a Mediator of Idea (E. Panofsky) 7. The role of medieval image: possibilities of interpretation from the perspective of contemporary art theories (M. Bartlová) 8. Change of visual code in the Renaissance period: sociological interpretation of art (P. Francastel) 9. The art of Renaissance in the view of cultural-historical interpretation (J. Burckhardt) 10. Vienna School I. - comparative and formal approaches (A. Riegr) 11. Viennese School II. - artistic work in the context of period culture (M. Dvořák) 12. Baroque principle: interpretation of art through developmental rules of styles (V. Birnbaum) 13. Final summary: period approaches and possibilities of interpretation of art from the Antiquity to the 19th Century.
