Avant-garde art in the light of subjective interpretation and the theory of empathy (W. Wörringer) 3. Psychological approaches to art-historical interpretation (H. Read, R. Huyghe) 4. Essential work by E. H. Gombrich and his theory of the history of perception 5. Artwork as a sign: the structuralist approach (H. Sedlmayr) 6. Artwork as a product of social context: sociological approaches (M. Baxandall, P. Bourdieu) 7. Searching for a comprehensive approach: interdisciplinary approaches to interpretation (M. Schapiro) 8. The Visible and the Invisible: a phenomenological approach to interpretation (M. Merleau-Ponty) 9. Feminism and re-interpretation of art history (L. Nochlin, L. Lippard) 10.
