Beginning of literary evolution. Ancient literature. Literature of the Middle Ages. Literature of Renaissance and reformation. Literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Literature of the 19th century. Literature of the 20th century. 1. What is world literature? Introductory lecture, definition of concepts. 2. Ancient literature: Egypt (Akhenaten's Hymn to the Sun, Book of the Dead), Mesopotamia (Epic of Gilgamesh), India (Bhagavad Gita), China (Talks of Confucius, Tao Te Ching) 3. Ancient literature: Roman poetry (Ovid, Virgil, Horatius, Sappho), Greek drama (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides) 4. Heroic and chivalric epics. 5. The birth of the novel - the turn of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (F. Rabelais, J. Swift, G. Chaucer) 6. Literature of the Renaissance period (W. Shakespeare, M. de Cervantes, Dante, E. Rotterdamský) 7. Baroque literature, the period of the Reformation (J. A. Comenský, Calderon de la Barca, T. Tasso) 8. Literature of the 17th and 18th centuries, classicism, enlightenment (P. Corneille, J. Racine, Moliére, Voltaire, D. Diderot, C. Goldoni, commedia dell´arte) 9. Literature of the 19th century, pre-romanticism, romanticism (J.W. Goethe, F. Schiller, A.S. Pushkin, M.J. Lermontov, G.G. Byron) 10. Realism, naturalism (Ch. Dickens, H. Ibsen, H. de Balzac, L. N. Tolstoy, F. M. Dostoevsky, N. V. Gogol, E. Zola) 11.
