Course content
|
Lectures: 1. Diachronic approach to language research. The periods of the Czech language development. The Proto-Slavic origin of Czech, the tendencies in development of Proto-Slavic. 2. Basic development processes in Proto-Slavic. Slavic languages. 3. Old Church Slavonic, its language system. The relation of Old Church Slavonic to Czech and to the Czech culture. 4. The period of old Czech - the 14th century. 5. The period of old Czech - the 15th century. 6. Humanistic Czech - the development of all structural levels, especially lexicon and syntax. Relations to Latin. 7. Baroque Czech - the development of all structural levels, especially lexicon. Relations of its development to modern Czech. 8. Formation of modern literary Czech in the national revival period. 9. The development of language norm in the 19th century. Key figures of Czech linguistics. 10. The development of language norm at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The language attitudes in the journal Naše řeč. 11. The Prague Linguistic Circle - structuralism. Attitudes to the literary language codification. 12. The literary language development after WW2. 13. Language stratification. The development of dialects, interdialect, common Czech, literary Czech. Seminar: 1. Introduction - basic methods of language development research. Sources of ancient language material, sources of reference, orthographical systems. 2. Language analysis focused on the processes of language development in Proto-Slavic. 3. Reading and interpreting an Old Church Slavonic text. 4. Language analysis focused on the processes of language development in the old Czech period (Dalimil´s Chronicle). 5. Language analysis focused on the processes of language development in the old Czech period (old Czech prose). 6. Analysis of the language of J. A. Komenský, especially from the syntactic point of view. 7. Reading humanistic works. 8. Reading and analysing Baroque prints. Orthographic principles. 9. Analysing the language attitudes of the national revival grammar books. 10. Analysis of the word formation system in the national revival period - the language means in Jungmann´s dictionary. 11. Analysis of the Czech language from the second half of the 19th century. 12. Analysing the views of the Prague Linguistic Circle members. 13. Assessment - tests.
