Course content
1. information about the course, needs analysis of doctoral students 2. PhD study, research and work of doctoral students, specific vocabulary related to doctoral study, conversation 3. structured CV, guidelines for writing a CV verbs and verb phrases used in academic style 4. formal and informal style, chracteristic features typical vocabulary and fraseology 5. language used for writing formal letters, written application for study abroad, written application for a job abroad 6. text structure, linking devices, their meanings and role 7. summarizing a text, paraphrasing longer structures using noun phrases, identifying key information in a text 8. writing a paper for publication, typical verb tenses 9. structuring an academic paper, an abstract, typical grammar structures and vocabulary 10. preparing a presentation, structure of the presentation, typical phrases to present research results, adverbs expresing stance 11. giving presentations, modal verbs expressing cause and effect, conditional clauses 12. discussing a professional topic, typical vocabulary and phrases 13. course evaluation

  • Presentation preparation (report in a foreign language) (10-15) - 10 hours per semester

-rozlišit modální slovesa pro přítomnost, minulost a budoucnost
-rozlišit tvary 1., 2. a 3. kondicionálu
-recognize forms of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd type of conditional clauses
-identify forms of relative pronouns and clauses
-identifikovat tvary vztažných zájmen a vět
-recognize verbs using an -ing form and verbs using an infinitive form
-rozlišit slovesa vyžadující gerundiální a infinitivní vazbu
-identify phrasal verbs used at B2 level of CEFR
-identifikovat frázová slovesa na úrovni B2 dle SERR
-recognize forms of passive voice of all tenses
-rozlišit tvary trpného rodu ve všech slovesných časech
-vyjmenovat slovesa pro užití v nepřímé řeči
-name verbs used in indirect speech
-rozlišit otázku přímou a nepřímou
-recognize direct and indirect questions
-recognize situations for the use of present simple and present continuous

-make fluent conversations about everyday topics with native speakers
-defend one's own opinion and present arguments for or against a given problem
-comprehend the meaning of a complex text dealing with both specific and abstract topics of a student's field of study
-write a comprihensible, detailed text dealing with a wide variety of topics of a student's interest
-write an article or a report and convey information
-understand prolonged pieces of speech or lectures
-follow and understand an exchange of opinions and join in the discussion on general topics
