Course content
Week 1 Introduction to the course, familiarization with the curriculum and requirements for completion of the course. Time expressions, adverbs and prepositions. Week 2 Imperative and modal verbs - revision and practice. Instructions and description of the workflow. Week 3 Past tense - more difficult cases of grammatical agreement between the predicate and the subject. Direct and indirect speech Week 4 Passive voice - revision, sentence transformations. Week 5 Inventors and discoverers. Text work. Possessive adjectives and their declensions. Week 6 Foreign proper names, spelling, pronunciation and declension. Week 7 Subordinate relative clauses - sentence transformations. Text work. Midterm test. Week 8 Aspect, aspect triads. Week 9 Singularia and pluralia tantum and their grammatical aspects. Week 10 Syntax - rule of the second position, more difficult cases. Week 11 Syntax - current sentence structure. Week 12 Revision of the course. Final test. Week 13 Test correction. Evaluation.

- distinguish selected genres of scientific style (paper, presentation, scientific article, technical description, etc. - distinguish annotation, abstract, summary and name their basic features - distinguish the forms of secondary prepositions - distinguish the forms of verbal nouns and adjectives - distinguish the meanings of the most used prefixes and suffixes in Czech - name the diacritics in Czech and describe their function, distinguish between the short and the long syllables and between the hard and soft consonants - explain the basic rules of Czech spelling, writing i/í vs. y/ý after consonants (esp. after the soft and the hard ones) - explain the basic rules of a sentence structure in Czech

- analyse selected genres of the scientific style based on their charateristic features - write an annotation, an abstract and a summary of a selected scientific text - actively use the most widely used secondary prepositions - actively use the proper forms of verbal nouns and adjectives - analyse a word from the point of view of word formation - actively use the most widely used prefixes and suffixes in their proper meaning - roperly use diacritics in written texts - properly use the spelling of i/í vs. y/ý after consonants (esp. after the soft and the hard ones) in written texts - make sentences in accordance with the basic rules of sentence clause structure in Czech

- write a message and an announcement - properly use the linguistic means of both Standard and substandard Czech with respect to the communicative situation - properly use forms of imperfective and perfective verbs with respect to their meaning - properly use endings of the L-participle in the past tense in writing - describe the most important events and personalities of Czech history and explain their importance - properly use forms of passive voice (both with reflexive pronoun and passive participle) - correctly interpret the most widespread gestures of Czech non-verbal communication, or even actively use them
